How to Make Virtual Parent-Time a Success
Make It Interactive.
There is no rule that says you can’t do the things you have always enjoyed doing with your child, simply because you are only able to connect on a screen. Reading, coloring, building Legos, sharing family photos, or playing music are all excellent ways to connect.
Focus on the Positive.
This is not the time to discuss heavy topics. Making promises, talking about the other parent, and discussing pending litigation are all off limits. Instead, share positive memories, ask questions, and your personal plans for the future.
Be Present and Listen.
Remove any distractions during your virtual parent-time. Make sure your internet connection is strong. Put your phone in the other room. Noise canceling headphones are helpful. Then listen to your child. Reinforce them by repeating what you heard and asking follow-up questions to show that you genuinely care about what they are saying.
